How to Prepare for CMMC

Step 1
Scope where CUI lives
Identify every system, device, and person that stores, processes, or transmits CUI. Narrowing the boundary — an enclave rather than the whole company — is the largest cost lever available.
Step 2
Assess against NIST SP 800-171
Run a control-by-control gap assessment across all 110 controls and score honestly. Inflated scores create false claims exposure.
Step 3
Write the SSP and POA&M
Document how each control is implemented and schedule remediation with owners and dates for every gap.
Step 4
Post your score and plan assessment
Submit your score to SPRS and, if the level requires it, schedule a third-party assessment well ahead of the bids you intend to pursue.
